He has 28 men among whom is an excellent Violinest, a fifer ^[[insertion]] Tambourinest [[/insertion]] & Drummer.  This is capital - during the long winter dispelling despondency - cheering the hearts of all!
This P.M. visited the "Rescue' - Saw the natives aboard - ^[[insertion]] Polar [[/insertion]] [[underlined]] Bear skins & meat [[/underlined]]- Rein deer meat & Salmon trout.  With Sterry Gardiner & Lamb went ashore ^[[insertion]] The snow balling of I & Sterry! [[/insertion]]    Met natives in their ^[[insertion]] skin  [[/insertion]] tents - ^[[insertion]] saw [[/insertion]] Nearby the skeleton of an Esq. woman ^[[Insertion]] just as [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] who [[/strikethrough]] died some three years ago!  She was sick - left to take care of herself - There were the remains of the tent - skin - bedding - stone lamp her utensils all beside the remains.  This inattention to the [[underlined]] sick & dead [[/underlined]] is a blot upon the otherwise noble people.  The honesty of the Esquimaux is seen in  this - on the shore were. myself ^[[insertion]] & Coal [[/insertion]] - 4 tubs whale line, tar; oil [strikethrough]] hogsheads[[/strikethrough]] - casks - minciny machine, coils of rope trying kettles, harpoons lances all left here last Fall - Now all safe as in safe!  5 1/2 O'Clock this P.M. Cudlargo's wife comes into the Cabin with Capt B. up the inlet where the Rescue got the Natives (including Uget & Cudlargo's wife) She heard the death of "John;  She takes his death sorrowfully - tearfully .  She is now before me - bathed in sad tears.  Tears flow faster & faster as Capt B opens "John" Chest & exhibits the treasures he ^[[insertion]] John [[/insertion]] had gathered in the States for his little girl & for her.  Uget stands by [[strikethrough]] three letters? [[/strikethrough]] John's widow's son.  The daughter is expected to-morrow - Capt B [[?]] up the dressed Doll which was sent to the daughter by the little girls of Capt. B.  The interest the widow takes in this & other Trinkets - 9 O'Clk eve - All retired   The widow has just come down into the cabin [[strikethrough]] & h [[/strikethrough]]  She is now gone   She seated herself upon John's Chest that now awaits the arrival of A-Kem-mer-lo - & pensively bent her head in sorrow while then her son came in & she soon left.

Thursday, Aug 9th 1860

This morning ^[[insertion]] we [[/insertion]] have been visited by the natives who are now flocking in from all directions
The "Rescue" with Capt. B. left for [[blank space for later word insertion]]
This afternoon went ashore with the dogs where they are to remain till we go ^[[insertion]] to an Inlet South of this. [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] South [[/strikethrough]].
Sterry visited the tents 3 in number with me.  Met John's ^[[insertion]] Cudlargo's [[/insertion]] widow.  The Balmoral petticoat! Enquiry for more!  Cudlargo's son ^[[insertion] to [[/insertion]] accompany me up the mountains.  The widow, Cudlargo's, by & by would like a husband.  Capt. Allen & me ashore.  Boiling tar.  My travelling bay ^[[insertion]] (Lieut Gov's gift [[/insertion]] containing my instruments & Portfolio lay down upon the rocks in perfect confidence that they are safe while I & Sterry call in the tents.  Return not a thing touched! ^[[insertion]] Ascent the mountains -  [[/insertion]] [[strikethrough]] The White [[/strikethrough]] [[underlined] The Crimson Snow![[/underlined]]  Beautiful snow balls of it.  The Dogs sight me away up the mountains.  They come!  They come!  The Gree[[? ink blot]] no!  the Esquimaux dogs - My dogs!  How they enjoy the excursion.  Bright lovely day - Snow Banks poor creatures, how they like once more to bury their shaggy, [[strikethrough]] bo [/strikethrough]] panting bodies beneath the
