Friday, Aug. 10th 
Capt. Allen of the Clipper [[insertion]] Black Eagle [[/insertion]] visited us this morning - spent the goodly part of the day with us.  Capt. B. & I showed him all the pretty & useful things we had.  Discussed Arctic matters in general.  Exhibited the Admiralty charts - gave him an account of my route & purposes relative to going to King William's Land.
This A.M slight rain - The Esquimaux getting numerous - preparing to go with [[strikethrough]] us [[/strikethrough]][[insertion]] [[strikethrough]] the [[/strikethrough]] Capt B. to Inlet below. [[/insertion]] We now have Salmon (finest fish in the world) - Venison & bear-meat! Took my 1st lesson in eating [[insertion]] white [[/insertion]] bear meat to-day! Found it good - a little oily - lamp oily [[insertion]] task [[/insertion]] - but yet [[underlined]]on the whole, good! [[/underlined]]
