collecting on Three Tops, Elk Knob, Snake Mountain and other adjoining mountains^[[,]] obtaining a fair number of specimens considering the heavy rains which hampers work of this kind. On July 22 I returned to Washington.

[[strikethrough]] I left Washington for [[/strikethrough]] ^[[For work in]] the autumn [[strikethrough]] collecting trip [[/strikethrough]] ^[[I left Washington]] on September 14 with Charles Wheeler as field assistant. Our first area was in Rockingham County in the north central par of the state. ^[[Where]] We collected along the head waters of the Dan and Haw Rivers [[strikethrough]], where, considering [[/strikethrough]] the ^[[weather was still hot and the country dry.]] [[strikethrough]] extremely warm weather, we collected a fair amount of specimens. [[/strikethrough]] [[line connecting the next sentence to the previous one, indicating same paragraph]] 
The latter part of September we moved southwest to Iredell and Catawba Counties. ^[[where]] Most [[sign indicating this should be "most"]] of our work was confined to the wooded bottom lands of the Catawba River. On October 10 we [[strikethrough]] moved [[/strikethrough]] ^[[continued]] east to Engelhard and collected in the low, flat and swampy sections of Hyde and Dare Counties. [[strikethrough]] In this area one may find it an excellent country for deer and goose hunting. We had a very profitable [[/strikethrough]] ^[[This is hunting country where deer and other game abound and our]] stay ^[[was profitable as we obtained many]] [[strikethrough]] here obtained [[/strikethrough]] birds and mammals typical of this low [[strikethrough]] country [[/strikethrough]] ^[[coastal region]]. While here we were joined ^[[for a few days]] by Dr. Alexander Wetmore and Mr. J. E. Graf. 

^[[#]] Leaving Engelhard on [[strikethrough]] October [[/strikethrough]] ^[[November]] 1 we moved we moved west to Pitt County, [[strikethrough]] collecting in [[/strikethrough]] ^[[to]] the vicinity of Bethel. Along Conetre Creek we found some very good stands of hardwood trees where [[strikethrough]] we [[/strikethrough]] collect [[strikethrough]] ed [[/strikethrough]] ^[[ing was good.]] [[strikethrough]] some very desirable specimens. [[/strikethrough]] Northwest of Greenville in Pitt County [[strikethrough]] we collected in some [[/strikethrough]] ^[[were]] large tracts of pine woods where we found white-eyed towhees ^[[again, and]], brown-headed nuthatches and red-cockaded woodpeckers ^[[were]] quite abundant. 

Our last two weeks were spent in and near [[strikethrough]] the summer resort of [[/strikethrough]] Beaufort in Carteret County. ^[[in work] [[strikethrough]] We collected [[/strikethrough]] in the salt marshes and low pine lands. On
