in the position assigned on the chart to the Fountain Rock. After passing out of the lee of the island a very heavy lumpy sea came rolling up from the SE with evidences of current, but little wind. Evening cloudy. Passed several tide trips in the night.

Friday June 5
Morning cloudy, fresh NE wind. Some sea on still work over vouchers. P.M. raise land in vicinity of Kadiak. At 10 minutes past 7 P.M. anchor off Chugafka Cove Kadiak. Later fog & rain. Catch about 100 codfish from the vessel after clearing up decks

Saturday June 6
Morning early cloudy with rain, at 10 A.M. begins to clear off and by noon is quite clear. Go ashore in the A.M. with the mail & see [[Sheeran?]] & Sol. Shirpser, get the promise of a few ethnological things from them. See the drunken old deacon Shiskin who has sold the book I was in search of to [[Pinart?]] for a bottle

of rum. Go aboard with [[Charitanoff?]] & pump him for Hydrographical items. P.M. Observations for time to rate chronometers, and astronomical azimuth on flagstaff if Ice Co's building Mr. Bailey dredges some very good things. Later Capt Herendeen & Noyes go to town. I remain and pick over dredgings on board.

Sunday June 7
Morning clear & fine. Obs. for equal altitudes AI & magnetic azimuth. Hewitt Shirpser, and Sheeran (Luke) come aboard to lunch. P.M. fix position of station. Go up to town. Get some ethnological things. Examine Govt. buildings with Sheeran & sign certificate of their condition & that there is no portable property to be transferred. Get some plants, the mail &c. & go aboard. After supper go after a crow & get 2 eggs & the remains of a bird shot to pieces after several ineffectual attempts. Aboard.
