Song Recital at Town Hall.
Another Triumph for Miss Joy Mearimore.
Miss Joy L. Mearimore in her second appearance in the Town Hall on Sunday afternoon drew a full hall and again satisfied the music loving public of Georgetown.

She opened her programme with Biddle's "How lovely are thy Dwellings" followed by Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Malotte's "Lord's Prayer" and immediately inspired confidence. In her second group she sang "La Danza" (Neapolitan Tarantelle) by Rossini, "Zueignung" (To You) by Strauss and in Bizet's "Habanera" from the Opera "Carmen" in which she gave a delightful interpretation "O, sleep why doest thou leave me?" from the Opera "Semele" by Handel was exceedingly well rendered. "Un Bel Di Vedremo" from the Opera "Madame Butterfly" by Puccini was splendid.

After the interval Miss Mearimore was heard singing "My mother bids me bind my hair" by Haydn, "Air from Milton's Comus" by Arne and "My Lover is a Fisherman" by Strickland, "I heard a Forest Praying" by de Rose, "How do I Love Thee" by Lippe and "None by the Lonely Heart" by Tschaikowsky. She again gave that delightful interpretation of "British Children's Prayer" by Wolfe and she received a tremendous ovation after she had sung "Hold On" arranged by Johnson. There was perfect understanding between herself and her accompanist, Mrs. Eleanor Kerry. She closed her programme proper with "Jesus walked this lonesome Valley" arranged by Dawson but had to respond to sustained applause for encores.

She was presented with flowers at the end of the first half of the programme and she in turn made a presentation to Mrs. Kerry as a mark of appreciation.

Joy Mearimore Entertained By Vesta Lowe Choir

Miss Joy Mearimore was guest of honour at a function at Miss Vesta Lowe's residence, 41 Robb Street, Bourda, last Saturday evening.

Miss Mearimore, during her stay in the colony gave three lectures with demonstrations to the choir which proved of immense value. To show her interest she wielded the baton when the choir was heard to advantage on August 11 at the Moravian Church, Queenstown. Miss Vesta Lowe and her choir as a mark of appreciation made presents to the visitor and included among the gifts was a work by Mr. Lawrence with words by Miss Lowe.

A very enjoyable evening was spent and after the usual courtesies the visitor replied, those present showing appreciation.

After the function Miss Mearimore expressed the opinion that Messrs. Lawrence and Harding who show signs of promise have a future if trained in the right direction.

Joy Mearimore Glad She Heard Police Choir

"I rather like the effect of your singing under cover, and still remain in pitch. Not many choirs can do that. I am very glad I had the opportunity of hearing you. It is my fervent hope that when I return to the Colony, and that I hope will be very soon, the choir will be bigger and better and more technically perfect."

This remark was made by Miss Joy Mearimore, talented young Lyric Soprano of the U.S.A., after hearing the Police Male Voice CHoir sing at a rehearsal yesterday afternoon for over 120 minutes, during which time she gave the benefit of her wide experience as a singer, musician, teacher and conductor.

SUCCESS WISHED

The rehearsal held at the Recreation Hall, Brickdam, was under the control of Mr. J. Phoenix, Warrant Officer, and Founder - Conductor of the Choir. Miss Mearimore expressed regret at not meeting him before, congratulated him on the fine work he had done for the "boys" and wished them continued success.

The members were loud in their praise of the very valuable instructions given them by Miss Mearimore. In response to the Choir's request for her to entertain them other than she had done in her demonstrations, Miss Mearimore sang Handel's Largo and Ave Verum Corpus both of which were highly appreciated. In appreciation of what she had done for them, Mr. Phoenix asked Miss Mearimore to accept a photograph of the Choir. She graciously accepted, bade them goodbye and wished them continued success in their good work.

Handel, Puccini, Hadyn, Arne, Strickland, de Rose, Lippe, Tschaikowsky, Wolfe, Johnson and Dawson--were not merely delightful but struck a responsive cord throughout the audience who brought her back to the stage on three occasions. She proved herself a singer with perfect voice-control, clear enunciation, and fine powers of interpretation.

In addition to the three extra songs, her programme listed 17 sung in English, Italian, Spanish and German. As accompanist, Mrs. Eleanor Kerry was all that could be desired. -S.B.S.
