The Eljos Orchestra

The Eljo's Orchestra (leader Norbert Fox) of the Leeds Jewish Orchestral Society, chose of their Civic Theatre concert last night a programme of popular items, which, in the main, received all the care for which this orchestra has a reputation in more serious works.

With Louis Marks conducting, there was competent playing of, among other things, Offenbach's "Orpheus in the Underworld" overture, Waldteufel's "Grenadiers' waltz, and the "William Tell" ballet music. Not so happy was the andante movement from Haydn's "Surprise" symphony, which, in spite of its precise steady pace, suffered from individual timings.

Two young soloists, Molly Barnett (piano) and Joy McLean (soprano), contributed groups of solos. Miss Barnet displayed a quiet and dignified artistry, in Chopin and Liszt pieces that holds much promise. Miss McLean (ably accompanied by Nina Coben) has a delicate pure voice that greatly pleased the big audience.

POPULAR CONCERT
THE ELJOS ORCHESTRA presented a popular concert before a large audience at Leeds Civic Theatre last night. The success of this organisation has been such that in the two years of its existence no less than £2,300 has been raised for charities, a noble effort.

A pleasing feature of their performances and one which has produced notable results is the discipline which their conductor, Louis Marks, rightly commands. It is always good to find an amateur ensemble directed with such authority as Mr. Marks displays, and responding so well as the Eljos players do to his capable and energetic gestures.

As chief guest artist, Joy McLean, an American singer, rendered operatic arias and ballads with exceptional style, control and tone.

Molly Barnett, a young Leeds pianist, showed considerable promise in several solos, the best of which was Chopin's "Raindrop" prelude. E.T.
