"SHOWING OFF" AN ORGAN
Notable Tadcaster performer returns

It was appropriate that a Tadcaster young man, Mr Vivian Newill, former organist at Hill Side Methodist church, should have the honour of taking a leading part in Saturday's reopening of the organ there, after a recent complete overhaul of the instrument.

The event was made the occasion of a special musical programme, and the goodly company were provided with what the superintendent minister (Rev Howard M. Jackson) described as "a wonderful treat."

Sharing the programme with Mr Newill (now of Leeds, where he is organist of the Odeon Cinema) was Miss Joy McLean, talented vocalist and soloist of the B.B.C. and the New York concert platforms. Mr. Jackson also summed up Miss McLean's performance with the words "Her singing has been an inspiration to us all."

The wonderful range of Miss McLean's voice was enthralling. Her singing of sacred solos, excerpts from well-known oratorios, two negro spirituals and the concluding "Lord's Prayer" was a delightful experience too rarely available at Tadcaster. The groups she performed consisted of two items by MacDermid, "The spirit of God is upon me" and "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom"; the spirituals, "By an' by" and "Couldn't hear nobody pray"; Cesar Franck's "O Lord most holy" and Gounod's "O Divine Redeemer"; and "With verdure clad" from Haydn's "Creation."

ACCOMPLISHED
Equally commendable for its skill in execution was the playing of Mr. Newill, who, as the Chairman (Mr. W. N. Eccles) later

Solos were sung by Mrs. Joy McLean, of the B.B.C. and the New York concert platform, at Tadcaster on Saturday, when she shared a program with Mr. Vivian Newill, organist at the Odeon Cinema, Leeds, at the reopening of the organ of the Hill side Methodist Church after overhaul.

New B.B.C. job

Vilem Tausky, who has conducted the B.B.C. Northern Variety Orchestra for the past two years in Manchester, has been appointed

Mr. Tausky

[[image]] Black and white photo[[/image]]
Mr. Ainsworth

associate conductor of the Northern Orchestra.

The appointment dates from October 1. It makes him co-equal to Mr. John Hopkins, who at 24 is the youngest conductor of a major orchestra in the country. It is due to the "volume of work" falling on Mr. Hopkins.

Mr. Tausky served with the Free Czech Forces in France at the outbreak of war and arrived in Britain in a pleasure steamer from Dunkirk.

Born in Czechoslovakia he was before the war conductor of the State Broadcasting Orchestra at Brno and of the National Opera Company of Czechoslovakia.

Although the appointment of a successor to the variety orchestra is still officially unsettled Mr. Alyn Ainsworth, who has been serving as second-in-command to Mr. Tausky, is a likely candidate, I hear.
