Mr. Philip J. Hickey
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

The St. Louis Board of Education this year has expressed its recognition of the work of Mr. Philip J. Hickey by naming him Superintendent. Mr. Hickey served as Acting Superintendent since September 8, 1942.

Mr. Hickey has been attached to the downtown office since 1934. He was twice elected Secretary and Treasurer of the Board. In January, 1940 he was named Assistant Superintendent in charge of Business Affairs.

Mr. Hickey entered the St. Louis Public School System in 1923 as principal of the Carondelet School.

Mr. John J. Maddox

ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT

Mr. John J. Maddox is regarded with respect and affection, by the principals, students and teachers with whom he works as assistant superintendent in charge of instruction and research.

Since coming to St. Louis in the autumn of 1910 he has been identified with almost every type of educational activity in the public school system, serving as principal on both the elementary and high school levels as superintendent, and as assistant superintendent in charge of high schools.

He has found time in addition to support civic enterprises and organizations, including the Neighborhood House, the parent teacher organization, and the Missouri State Teachers Association.

A native of Kentucky, Mr. Maddox is a graduate of Yale University and Columbia University. He has done further graduate work at Washington University and Ohio State University. He holds membership in three honorary fraternities: Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Delta Kappa, and Phi Beta Kappa.

Mr. Maddox began his professional work in Kentucky. From 1907 to 1910 he was principal of the Windham High School at Willimantic, Connecticut. In both localities he was active in professional and civic life.
