Founded in 1890 as the Sumner Normal School, Stowe Teachers College (renamed in 1929 to honor author Harriet Beecher Stowe) was a training school for African American elementary school teachers in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1954, as one of several steps to integrate the St. Louis public school system in the aftermath of Brown v. Board of Education, Stowe Teachers College was merged with its white counterpart, Harris Teachers College, into what is known today as Harris-Stowe State University.
