WHAT STOWE BELIEVES

We believe

the goal of American education is the practice of the democratic way of life by all American citizens;

that the good citizen is the product of all our educational institutions such as the home, church, and school;

that the school along with the other agencies of our changing social order must constantly reconstruct its program so as to focus attention upon the problems of organized society.

that the total life of the school must be constructed so as to provide for the greatest possible self-development along both general and occupational lines;

that in constructing such a program, the best results can be attained by accepting the psychological premise that the total individual's development is the goal to be sought;

that in the learning process not only primary learnings must be watched but the concomitants as well.

Thus, it becomes incumbent upon the teachers college and the junior college to discover those experiences which will best lay a foundation of sound scholarship, cultural background, and professional or vocational skill for the particular groups of students which they serve, and for the particular community in which they operate.

THE SLOAN FOUNDATION GRANT
Stowe Teachers College

Stowe Teachers College received a signal honor this year in being selected as one of the five teachers colleges in America to carry forward research under a grant from the A.P. Sloan Foundation of New York. Through this grant Stowe is recognized as a progressive college whose philosophy and practice are directed toward a functional curriculum.

The Sloan grant will make possible an intensive survey of problems peculiar to this urban area, looking toward the development of techniques by directed classroom activity.
 .

With Dr. Harry S. Blackison as coordinator, students and faculty members will determine the criteria and formulate techniques whereby these criteria might be met.
