20th March 1943 (Sat.)

A fine day, nearly all sunny, but with strong, cold E. breeze.

In afternoon rode to Glenasmole, Co. DU., & left cycles at Moore's & walked round upper reservoir.

A few bumbles seen on heard, but sweeping produced no hymenoptera & no insects brought home.

No Chiffchaff heard! although Ivan M. Goodbody reported its arrival at St. Columba's College on 17th.

First white mossy Saxifrage in flower in front garden, so that this year red & white are out together. First flower on Primrose x Cowslip in back garden & first anthers seen on Carex stricta by motor house wall.

21st March 1943.

All sunny till 4.30 P.M. when a sudden drip started after E. wind had dropped; after a couple of hours rain, E. got up again & cleared off the rain, which did much good in garden. In afternoon, before rain, walked to Dartry, up Dodder to Orwell Bridge & home. No sign of Chiffchaffs. Many Meloe on hedge bank of path up Dodder in one place & several pairs in cop.

23rd March 1943.

A very fine day, but wind still E. & chilly. In afternoon took 2.25 bus for Rathgar to Ballyboden & walked via Rockbrook to Larch hill & spent a couple of hours in the old disused sandpit on left bank of the "Little Dargle". Sun obscured by haze to some extent & no bees seen, except a couple of Bumbles flying over. Swept a few beetles & 3 Proctos. Saw several Small Tortoiseshell & one Peacock Butterflies in sandpit.

27th March 1943 (Saturday!)

A fine day, after two softer days with W. wind & some showers, but after a very fine sunny morning showers in afternoon with some hail & N.W. wind, getting colder as day advanced. Rode to Glenasmole in afternoon, which escaped the showers, & heard one Chiffchaff across lower reservoir, somewhere near the "Willow Glade" & on return journey saw flock (4 to 6) Sand Martins flying over the Dodder below Templeogue Bridge. Tried sweeping in the "sun-trap" on W. side of lower reservoir, but results very disappointing; again tried sweeping just below upper dam & the only hymenoptera seen was one ♂︎ Nomada leucophthalma, probably swept off flowers of Berberis, but this not certain.
