28th May 1943  First flowers are Rosa "tomantosa" [[?]] in back garden opened (3), which is a very early date! On 29th, 1st flower on rambling rose beside it!
♀♀ of Bombus lucorum seen at Columbine on this & several previous nights!

30th May 1943. A beautiful day of sun & cloud, with gentle W. breeze, which died away in the late afternoon when wind probably E along coast & showers appeared over Dublin & Maymouth, Int. [[?]] none came our way. Rode to Rye Water & Royal Canal above Leixlip, Co.KD., arriving at 12 noon exactly & leaving at 6 PM., home 7.27, after a small sharp depression on previous (Sat.) night, with such distant lightening between midnight & 2 A.M.  Sun very hot when t, wind fresh & pleasant & not sultry. Swift in June places as follows:-- Slope from road at Louisa Bridge to Rye Water on right bank of same & above aqueduct, as usual; mostly amongst Irises by river & along tributary at N. end of second field 12 till 1.40.
2  Flat around swamp on level of mineral spring at top of station 1 (after lunch) 2 till 2.30
3. Side of canal, tow path, & outside plantation 1/2 mile W. of Louise Bridge, R Canal, 3.0 till 40.  
4 Inside wall of plantation as usual, 4.30- 5.45 including park E of Mitchell's Field gate.

2 Corncrakes at 3!  Wild Roses (R. canina gramp [[?]]) will int all the roses from Dublin to Leixlip!
