14.9.43, cont. L. Curra, Galtymore, ST. cont.

Only one form of mossy saxifrage seen, namely one with very broad leaves, resembling one of the forms found in Brandon. Many plants seen, as at the cliff with Arabis petraea, at higher altitudes than recorded by Hart. The only insects seen during day were some small Daddylonglegs on way up but below 2,000 ft., several gnats (one of which seen on summit where we had tea, & a single specimen of Carabus catinulatus taken on way up gully at about 2,200 ft., but the early part of the way up from lake was made in wet mist with everything soaking & the later in such a wind as few insects could live in & impossible to search for them in. On the summit the force of the wind was almost too great to face - ten yards down the S. slope there was no wind at all in some places.

One small moth seen by Daisy just below the Arabis cliff (which was in shelter!) on return journey. Collected mosses for Miss Jeannie Thomson & Mr Bradshaw at 3 spots - (1) where we had lunch, 2,000 ft; on summit at Dawsons Table, say, 3,000 ft. & at Arabis Cliff say 2,650, according to Hart.

15th Sept. 1943.

A fine fresh morning with strong W. wind, after a fine night with full moon (Harvest Moon), turning misty in afternoon with slight rain blowing in the strong wind, which gradually veered from W. to SW, but no rain. Did not go out in forenoon, but mounted insects.

In afternoon walked up to house in woods rented by "Mr. Shepherd", an evacuee from England, to examine skeleton of Irish Elk there, but this turned out to be that disposed of a few years ago by the Kildare St. Club, Dublin, & not of local origin as stated by the natives.

On way up through demense & way down right sides of avenue (= 1), & later 4.30 P.M. swept under large trees in field NE of ruined Ballincourty house & along lee side of hedge in same field opposite the stables (= 2) & between same hedge & back avenue, under trees along course of small stream (= 3)
