22nd Sept. 1943.

A beautiful autumn day after a clear cold night, mainly sun & that hot, with some cloud & light N.W. breeze. Left hotel on bikes at 10.40 & left bikes, as before, at Gorman's across the valley, & walked up path to outlet of L. Curra, then cut across this & up gully exactly on N. face of Galtymore, collecting by sweeping at foot of gully at ca. 1,000 ft.: found Sax. hirta (broad-leaved var.) & Sax. stellaris, with several Hawthorn bushes & small, ancient, trees of Rowan: near upper limit of main gully turned east & traversed slope which brought us out on top of great moraine surrounding Lough Diheen, half way down which to lake we had lunch in hot sun & I did some sweeping amongst Scirpus & Juncus, &c. on N. & E sides of lake with quite good results: saw here also one small Tortoiseshell Butterfly & Daisy twice saw a White Butterfly (? species)

After lunch rounded E. end of lake & worked along cliffs, ca. 100-200 feet above S. shore, to W. end; then went up stream to upper cliffs at ca. 2600, which must be Hart's station for Saussurea alpina. We failed to find the Saussurea, but did find a belt of Salix herbacea, with very large leaves fringing the base of the uppermost range of cliffs just west of the one conspicuous cliff leading to the main ridge between Galtybeg & Galtymore.

It was here we expected to find Saussurea but instead found an abundance of Geum rivale, as well as at various places on the lower cliffs, particularly stated by Hart only to occur on the cliffs above L. Muskry. A single clump of Salix herbacea occurred on a wet rock not far above the lake, which had evidently fallen from above & was not “at home” but still alive. The broad-leaved form of Saxifraga hirta is abundant all over these cliffs & one small piece of a more finely cut variety was taken but doubtfully
