Head, Office of Ecology
Museum of Natural History
Smithsonian Institution
Washington, D.C. 20560

Dear Dr. Buechner:

Thank you for your kind telephone call about the progress of DMZ project. I have recieved a copy of your letter of the proposal to send me to Korea addressed to Dr. Savely of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. I am very glad to see that I would be able to make a visit to Korea in behalf of the Smithsonian Institution helping DMZ project and the development of Korean biological research. By reading your letter of the proposal I clearly understand my mission to Korea.

Before making a trip to Korea I would like to do some readings in regard to the ecosystem ecology and programs of biological research. If you can, I would like to borrow or get a copy of "Environment of the Cape Thompson Region, Alaska, ed. by Normal J. Willimovsky, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Division of Technical Information, 1250 pp., 1966" for my use.

In order to request the leave of absence to the University of Minnesota I would like to have an official letter describing my mission to Korea addressed to Dr. A.C. Hodson, Head, Department of Entomology, Fisheries, and Wildlife, University of Minnesota, St. Paul, Minnesota, 55101. This letter can be sent directly to him or to me.

I like to announce the arrival of our new baby boy, Sturat K. Kim, on October 28, 1966. This event is of significance to me and my wife. Before my official visit to Korea was planned, my wife Young Hee was planning a trip to Korea for two reasons: 1. to explore the possibility of returning within next few years and 2. to rest and re-acquaint with Korea. However, her trip was delayed because of financial difficulty and her pregnancy. For my personal reasons my wife's visit to Korea is as important as my visit. Without her visit to Korea I will be unable to make a decision when time comes whether we will return to Korea for good or not.
