Mr. Edwin L. Tyson
Smithsonian Field Representative
Cooperative Program of Ecological Studies in Korea
Seoul, Korea

Dear Mr. Tyson:

You are hereby designated as a Contracting Officer for the Smithsonian Institution for the purpose of purchasing two long wheel base Toyota four-wheel-drive station wagons for use in the Cooperative Program of Ecological Studies in Korea.

It is desired that the purchase of the vehicles be accomplished under the most advantageous terms feasible and that custom duty not be paid if avoidable. In this respect, the assistance of the United States military procurement authorities in Korea should be solicited.

The Smithsonian Institution check in the amount of $5,200.00 which is enclosed is to be used to cover the cost of the two vehicles. It is to be noted that a restricting endorsement appears on the reverse which limits the use of the check to the purchase of the vehicles. Any amount remaining after full payment is to refunded by a check payable to the Smithsonian Institution.

After the vehicles are acquired it will be necessary to furnish to Mr. F.G. Barwick, Chief of the Supply Division, Museum of Natural History Building, Washington, D.C. 20560, copies of all title papers, the date of acquisition, final price paid and the serial number of the vehicles. Smithsonian Institution property accounting numbers will be assigned after receipt of the above data. Any questions you may have concerning the business aspects of this procurement should be directed to Mr. Barwick.

Insurance coverage (personal liability and property damage) will be provided by the Smithsonian Institution's existing general policy coverning its privately owned vehicles in foreign nations. A certificate of insurance will be provided to you at the earliest practical date after noti-fication of actual acquisition is received by Mr. Barwick.
