trying to obtain money for future years years that it would be necessary for us to do enough work inside and outside the DMZ to point out the advantages of the overall plans, and to show that we really have unique opportunity here that exist in no other place in the world. I get the undercurrent feeling that they do not believe our talk about selling our plans to some granting agency. They feel certain the money is forthcoming and that we are using the idea about impressing an agency in order to get more work out of them. Here is a place that I think you should write Dr. Kang and use as strong language as possible to point out that the money will not automatically come to Korea, but that they must show some results to back up our plans as they stand today. Further, that we must have something that an agency will buy, something more than just a need for Korea.

In living here around the University, I have become acquainted with several of the students, and from these and statements they make to me I learn a bit about the thinking here. Fore example, the students that wish to go abroad to study cannot go to their professor and ask for a recommendation for fear he will not let then finish the degree they are working on here now. They must wait until they finish the degree to ask for a letter, then they are afraid it will not help much. Also I have learned that if a student gets a Ph.D. abroad, especially in the U.S., he has little hope of getting work in Korea. Even the graduate students know that this is because the training here leaves a lot to be desired.

We have a very nice house, that is, the living room and bed room, but the kitchen is terrible. Aura does not seem to mind as much as I expected her to. At least we can keep it warm with steam heat. It is the office that is cold, and I have not spent one minute warm in it for the last week. I am going to buy a small electric heater pretty soon if they do ^[[not]] hurry and get something.

I have been working on my ideas about specific projects, reading as many papers as I can find, having the girl to build up a bibliography on Korean natural history, and in my spare time I have made a artificial key to the mammals expected to be found in the DMZ. I am also encouraging the other people to make keys for use of the several workers. The only one that has responded at all is a young fellow who is interested in herpetology. Since it looks like I will have little opportunity to get out with each of the scientist I have ask Dr. Kang if he would go along with getting each scientist in the project to do the following things:

1. Review [[strikethrough]] in [[/strikethrough]] his field of specialization and evaluate the work.
2. Compile a bibliography of the 15-20 most important papers in his field.
3. Point out the [[strikethrough]] p [[/strikethrough]] ^[[m]] ost important problems in his field.
4. Prepare a list of qualified scientist in Korea that would be familiar with that kind of research.
5. Make a general statement just how each project fits into the overall ecosystem concept.
6. Make a general statement as to how man night be benefitted from the project, ^[[and/]] or the academic interest involved.
