16. Description of duties and responsibilities

^[[Dr. Edwin L. Tyson has been employed as a research associate to Dr. Helmut K. Buechner, Head of the Office of Ecology, to assist in the preparation of a 5-year plan of investigation in ecosystem research in the area immediately south of the demilitarized zone in Korea. This will include provision of a general description of the vegetation, animal life, soils, physiography, and climate of the area based on studies of aerial photographs and fieldwork. Appropriate maps are to be prepared to accompany the descriptions. In so far as possible Dr. Tyson is to help initiate preliminary surveys of the physical characteristics, flora, and fauna by Korean scientists and to arrange for the deposit of specimens at the Smithsonian Institution.

Dr. Tyson is to attend the Pacific Science Congress in Korea from 22 August to 10 September 1966, after which he is to proceed to Seoul, Korea, where he will remain for a period of 6 to 8 months. A preliminary report of the 5-year plan is to be ready on 1 July 1967. After consultation with relevant persons within and outside of the Smithsonian, the plan is to be rewritten in a form ready for submission as a proposal to private and/or federal granting agencies.

While in Korea Dr. Tyson will work closely with Dr. Yung Sun Kang, head of the Department of Zoology at Seoul National University, in preparation of the 5-year plan. However, Dr. Tyson's direct line of responsibility will be to Dr. Buechner.]]
