[[underlined]]SOILS[[/underlined]]

1. Make soil map of area immediately south of the DMZ, especially on all the study sites regardless of the project.

2. Study changes in soil following abandonment, such as humas, chemical content, water holding capacity, biota, etc.

3. Study process of soil development from the different parent rocks. Compare and contrast fertility.

4. Make detailed study of the soil and its chemical and biological content on areas of stream flow studies.

5. Study development of soils on bare slopes. Determine the cause of the bareness and suggest methods of revegetating.

6. Study the differences in soils in relationship to the vegetation and animal population patterns. Attempt to isolate the role of soil in plant and animal distribution.

7. Determine the effects of fire on the soil and its organisms, water holding capacity, chemical content, etc.

[[underlined]]BOTANY[[/underlined]]

1. Initiate taxonomic studies of all groups of plants, preferably by families or genera.

2. Study community development following abandonment of farm lands, villages and hillsides. Also study areas which were completely devastated during the Korean conflict, including lowland areas and all elevations in the mountains.

3. Com are and contrast areas within and outside the DMZ as to the structure of the community, abundance, diversity, etc.

4. Study vegetation changes from air photos taken through a period of years and study noted changes on the ground.

5. Determine productivity of the various plan communities on potential or abandoned agricultural lands and compare with farm production of similar areas.

6. Experiment with the possibility of establishing stable grass or shrub communities by selective cutting, chemicals or fire.

7. Study in detail the ecology of economically important and dominant species. Determine limiting factors and method of control and/or propagation of each.

8. Study germination and development of seedlings of all species. Collect seed samples of each and make herbarium specimen of seedlings.
