Dear Dr. Savely:

This is to thank you for your note on August the 4th and to inform you that we have just received a cable from Ambassador Brown in our Embassy in Seoul concerning our proposed ecosystem field research in the Buffer Zone to the south of the Demilitarized Zone in Korea.

The relevant portion of the cable reads:

"United Nations Command component of military armistice commission has no objection to conduct of biological field investigations made in area immediately south of Demiliarized Zone in connection with research program mentioned Reference Circular Airgram. It should be clearly understood that area in question is that immediately south of Demilitarized Zone, not RPT not within Demiliarized Zone. In order to avoid confusion, recommend future messages this subject not use Reference Circular Airgram term "Buffer Zone".

"USFK is prepared to provide assistance and support in connection with this program for ecosystem research in certain areas located immediately south of Demiliarized Zone, consistent with the availability of resource and operational priorities..."

We are also pleased to report that our Embassy in Seoul is now seeking the approval of the Government of the Republic of Korea for this project. we expect to have a favorable response very soon.
