SUBJECT: ^[[Secretarial Pay Rate for Korean Employees in Seoul]]
[[preprinted]]

Mr. Wilner, Korean Desk, State Department, phone: Code 182-6188, submitted the following information:

The pay scale for the local Korean employees (secretaries) employed at the American Embassy in Seoul ranges from $575 per year to $865 per year. Included in this yearly rate are such fringe benefits as: severence pay if separated for any reason -- you pay 1 month's salary per year of service. A year-end bonus is included in the yearly pay rate.

Top grade secretaries employed by business are usually paid considerable more than the above-mentioned figures because of such reasons as being bilingual, etc.

All employees employed by Americans work an 8-hour day. [[underlined]] No secretaries working for Americans work on an hourly basis. [[/underlined]]

If secretaries were able to be hired on a temporary basis, you would have to pay a higher rate than the generally prevailing salary scales in the city.

All of the above information was relayed to Mr. Hurlbut today, and he was given Mr. Wilner's name and phone number.
