4) Locations to be studied:
A preliminary survey of DMZ was performed from December 20 to December 22 in 1965. DMZ (length: 248 km, width: 4 km) is a military boundary between north and south part of Korea and this area is minefield except a few narrow paths for patrol. Then DMZ is a restricted area and we could survey only the areas in the vicinity of southern boundary. Some of these areas surveyed were destroyed by fire according to military operation, but many of these are well conserved. Therefore we seledted these areas for this present research. (See figure)
a. Punch-uk-kol (37°55';126°40')
The nature and natural resources of this area are well conserved though there used to be houses and dry fields and paddy fields.
b. Myojang-dong (38°17';127°10')
Once this area was completely destroyed because of serious combat. But now its nature and natural resources are well conserved.
*Besides these two areas mentioned above the following two areas of the eastern part (of Korea) were selected. Preliminary survey of these two areas will be made from June 15th, 1966.
c. Injae (punch bowl)
This area is a basin (hollow) and here only the ROK Army are stationed. The forest of this area is said to be comparatively well conserved.
