Geological Survey Department of the Interior Washington, D. C. 20242 -- please forward Korea Address: Technical Advisor UFOM/K APO San Francisco 96301 [[/column 2]] Dear Mr. Callahan: Thank you for your letter of 24 February with the helpful comments regarding the proposed ecological research in the DMZ. I am happy to report that there is considerable interest of certain staff members of the Smithsonian Institution in helping Dr. Kang develop his plans. For this reason we are trying to arrange for him to come to the states to attend the Short Course on Administration of National Parks and Reserves at the University of Michigan in May, and come to the Smithsonian in order to discuss plans for the ecological studies in the DMZ. I am sure it would be helpful to Dr. Kan if you could have a further talk with him about some of your ideas for this research so that what you have in mind might be incorporated in plans he would be working on at the time of his Washington visit. I am pleased that your friends in Japan have encouraged you with regard to the Science Congress. We have just had word from NIH that they cannot support travel to the Congress. This leaves us in a most difficult situation as far as getting U. S. participants to the Tokyo meeting for the public health and medical sciences program. With best wishes for the continued success of your work, and warm personal regards. Sincerely yours, Harold J. Coolidge bcc: H Buechner with incoming letter
