Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources in Korea

(1) Aggressive measures are yet to be worked out, though I have long been desiring eagerly for urgent measures on the part of our government in regard to the conservation of nature and natural resources in Korea since the time of Korean War. Vigorous efforts are being made by both biologists and geologists in order to attain the goal in conservation through the recommendations toward the government, for example, designation of the government departments as the interested party in conservation and establishment of such related laws as nature and natural resources preservation law, evaluation of scholastic research and also enlightenment of the general public.

(2) In accordance with the recommendations made by Dr. Harold J. Coolidge during his fourth time visit to Korea in the recent time, a better understanding and appraisal was appreciated on the significance of conservation in Korea among the interested government authorities and scholars.

On 3rd November 1963, we invited Mr. William J. Hart, a park-system planner and he has submitted to us a valuable report on the actual survey trip of the possible future sites for national park in Chili Mt., Solak Mt., and also DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). In response to this, on 24th December 1963,
