Oxford NC Dec 30/68 Petition Dr H. C. Vogell Superintendent Education, Sir, we the undersigned citizens of Oxford N. C., do respectfully petition you for aid to build a school house for the colored people in Oxford N. C. We have a lot paid for, (a copy of the deed has been forwarded to you,) According to the estimate of workmen the house needed will cost about seven hundred dollars. We can raise four hundred of it, in labor & money. We therefore earnestly petition you for the remainder, to enable us to build a house in which our children, young men, & women may receive the instruction which is needed to dispel the cloud of ignorance which obscures our mental vision, & fit them to become intelligent & useful citizens. Very Respectfully Lawson His mark X Wright [[signature]] Henry Hester [[/signature]] Mr Lawson Wright & Henry Hester are two as good, responsible colored men as there are in Oxford [[signature]] Mrs S.
