MANUFACTURERS NEW YORK, CHICAGO [[/preprinted left margin]] the matters under its supervision for the past year:- [[underlined]] Hodgkins Fund. [[/underlined]] Report has already been made of the allotment from this Fund of a total of $23,200.00 for the establishment and maintenance of a station at Calama, Chile, at which researches in solar radiation are being conducted under the direction of Dr. C. G. Abbot, Assistant Secretary of the Institution and Director of its Astrophysical Observatory. It will be recalled also that an allotment of $5,000 from this Fund was made to Dr. R. H. Goddard, of Clark College, Worcester, for developing certain devices to be used in connection with the study of the temperature of the higher atmospheric strata. Of this sum $1,205.00 remains unexpended to date. It may be remarked that these experiments took on a larger aspect than was originally expected, and that further aid to the extent of $30,000 was provided by the War Department. [[underlined]] The Roebling Donation. [[/underlined]] Dr. Abbot decided that it would be advantageous to the work in Chile, if the Station should be removed from Calama to a more satisfactory site. He planned also to establish a Station in the Harqua Hala Mountains of Arizona. There being no funds of the Institution available for these purposes, the matter was placed before Mr. John A. Roebling, of New Jersey, who generously contributed $11,000 of which there has been expended the following amounts:- In Chile, - $5,061.45 In Arizona, - $3,884.85 leaving a balance of $2,053.70.
