part of the edition of each of these publications is distributed free to libraries, educational institutions, and specialists throughout the world.

The nation-wide popularity of the Annual Report is attested by the fact that a cataloguer in the office of the Superintendent of Documents has placed it first among all public documents in number of requests from libraries to receive it. In the Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections may be mentioned a paper by Dr. Walter Fewkes on "Designs on Prehistoric Pottery from the Mimbres Valley, New Mexico", which has created great popular interest; a timely paper by Mr. C. W. Mitman on "Some Practical Aspects of Fuel Economy"; a reprint of the Smithsonian Physical Tables; and a new volume in the Smithsonian series of Tables, entitled "Smithsonian Mathematical Formulae and Tables of Elliptic Functions", which it is expected will be of great value to engineers.

Among the publications issued by the National Museum, of special interest are another volume in the series of life histories of North American birds, by A. C. Bent; Part IV of Cushman's monographic work on Foraminifera of the Atlantic Ocean; and a monograph on the North American later Tertiary and Quaternary Bryozoa, by Canu and Bassler.

The first publication to be issued by the National Gallery of Art since its establishment as an independent unit under the Institution is an illustrated catalogue of the collection in the Gallery.

On motion, the Secretary's report was accepted.

In this connection, the Secretary called attention to the publications issued under the direction of the Institution during the past year, especially to the small number published by the very limited income of the Institution.
