project in connection with another project which has come to to it, to accept and display a large amount of historical railway transportation material which is now available. There is probably not sufficient ground now held by the Smithsonian to accommodate these large displays, which require an immense amount of space or else fairly high and expensive buildings. In this connection your Committee would undoubtedly have to consider the probable necessity of acquiring ground south of B Street and between Seventh and Twelfth Streets, upon which comparatively inexpensive one-story buildings might be erected which for many years would satisfactorily house these exhibits.

6. The Committee has learned that the Research Corporation, formed February 26, 1912, of which reports were made from time to time to the Board of Regents, has lately received considerable funds from the royalties from the use of the Cottrell patents which it holds, and that the Corporation is considering the possible support of the activities of the Smithsonian Institution through these. The Committee directed the Acting Secretary to request the attendance of Dr. Cottrell at this meeting of the Board of Regents to inform the Board what, if any, action was now advisable in these premises. Dr. Cottrell was thus invited by the Acting Secretary, and the Board has just heard him in this connection.

7. The Committee took up the subject of an amendment to the Fundamental Act of the Smithsonian Institution, as contemplated in S. 1300 recently introduced at its request by Senator Smoot.

8. The Committee recommended that the Acting Secretary be directed to pring for the use of the members of the Board of Regents the will and the deed of gift of the late Charles L. Freer, and such other papers as have a bearing on the conduct and administration of the Freer gift and bequest, as a guide in the future. The Acting Secretary reports that this text is in preparation and will be ready for distribution to the members of the Board at an early date.

Respectfully submitted for the Committee by

Frederic A. Delano, Chairman.

On motion, the report was received and ordered filed.
