National Museum (Continued) Books Increase in present appropriation - $ 3,000 The fund of $2000 available July 1, 1928, is not sufficient. Many books and papers are obtained by gift or exchange. Some, however, must be bought. Scientific works are high in price and are increasing steadily in number. They must be made available for our workers. B. National Zoological Park. Additions to Personnel: 1 Assistant Director of Gardens - $ 2,700 To take charge of the grounds in the Park, with knowledge of trees, plants, lawns and landscaping. The park now covers 175 acres with more than 100 acres developed for use. 2 Veterinarian P 3 - 3,300 Services of a veterinarian are required to maintain our varied stock of animals in proper health. At present the keepers are expected to prescribe, with a veterinarian called in in exceptional cases, a plan that does not work successfully. 3 Assistants to head keeper P2 at $2700 - 8,100 Men capable of making scientific observations to serve under the head keeper to have charge respectively of the collections of living mammals, birds, and reptiles. For additional maintenance, purchase of food and forage, and other necessary expenses in upkeep - 60,000 The present funds are insufficient for current needs so that the park is gong steadily behind, in spite of its greater popularity as indicated by increased attendance. For research on living animals - 5,000 To provide facilities for research at the Zoo by specialists and other students, to include studies of intestinal and other parasites of importance in disease.
