The Secretary said that in view of the resignation of Chief Justice Taft, the Board of Regents had adopted the following resolutions at the meeting of February 1[[strikethrough]]4[[/strikethrough]]^[[3]], 1930: RESOLVED; That the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution has learned with deep regret of the illness and consequent resignation of its Chancellor, the Honorable William Howard Taft, from the office of Chief Justice of the United States, thereby automatically severing his connection with this Board; RESOLVED; That the Board hereby expresses its deep sense of the great service rendered by Mr. Taft to the Smithsonian Institution, and of the loss in counsel and in association which his departure entails; RESOLVED; That a copy of these resolutions be communicated to Mr. Taft. This was done, and, under date of February 25, the following letter was received: Supreme Court of the United States, Washington, D.C. February 25, 1930. My dear Dr. Abbot: Mrs. Taft has asked me to convey to the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution, through you, an expression of her sincere thanks for the kindly resolution of sympathy and approval adopted by the Board and sent to the Chief Justice.
