The Berry Family
William Berry
William Berry, the founder of the Berry family in this county, was a native of Loudon county, Virginia. He was born on October 26, 1768. Of his antecedents little is know except that he was a son of Benjamin Berry. The only record we have of him being that he (Benjamin) took the Oath of allegiance to the State of Virginia September 26, 1777, which was in the second year of the Revolutionary war. This oath was taken before one Wiliam Heaton, a notary, who certified it under his seal. Whether or not he was a soldier is not known. He may have been some sort of official of the newly established revolutionary government.

The above mentioned document was found among the papers of Mrs. Catharine Reger, a daughter of Benjamin Berry, who bore the name of his grandfather.

The paper is in possession of Earl Barrett, a great-grandson of Benjamin Berry.

William Berry was first married to Agnes Kitchin, a native of Virginia, who was born in 1770. They were married on June 18, 1790 and to them the following children were born.
