Thursday, April 28   Rome-

After his release, made his way to Rome. His wife, now 50, was formerly wealthy. He is devoted to her & respects her highly. His brother, who in the meantime became a doctor - suffered through his work in the war - with a certain nervous melancholia - never married & only since he began to paint during the past two years, has begun to feel normal. Perkoo does a great deal of work - 420 portrait commissions in the past ten years. (Also did King & Queen of Bulgaria) He is truly charming - with his wide, open vulnerable eyes and it was good to meet him in Rome.

Came back by 7 PM. to arrange for the two day trip to Pompeii & Capri, which gives me three days again in Rome before I leave for Nice - Will return early to pack & be ready for 6.30 AM departure time.

Friday, April 29 - Rome to Pompeii & Naples.

We will be passing the Tirrhenian sea town of Terracena, which has been a popular holiday resort for Roman Society since 338 B.C. Then, continuing down the Appian Way - we will come to another resort, Formia, on the north shore of the Gulf of Gaeta. Then over the Garigliano River & along the Dominitian Road which cuts thru the Phlegraen Fields (a former volcanic region where numerous craters have developed into hill ranges. Onward to Pozzuoli & Naples for lunch.

Along the Vomero on the heights of the city - one can admire the Hippodrome, the Overseas Fair, the Posillipo & descending by Via Caracciolo, the sea from side promenades, the Victory Park, the Plebiscite Square with the Basilica of S. Francesco di Paola, the San Carlo Opera House - the Royal Palace. Drive ends with Sata Lucia from where the Castel dell'Ovo is visible. 

After lunch - Pompeii & the excavations of a once buried city 79 AD then to Sorrento, city of orange & lemon groves. Here, a magnificent
