516 Tuesday, May 3 - Roma. Color of Stones. After lunch -again, the C.D.(circolaire) train around the city line for two hours studying the color of the stones everywhere. (I must not forget these wonderful dirty cream whites, ochres, rose umber, violet & blue umbers, pale siennas - pale umbered orange, greys into black - & all shades of venetian (pale rose to deep brownish venetian Red.) A snack at the American Bar restaurant & to bed early. Tomorrow, Nice! May 4' Rome to Nice. Not particularly interesting trip. Sat next to an Italian priest who read his bible all the way, crossing himself while saying his prayers. I had met, before boarding the plane, a young American, of about 30, a pianist (also violinist) who has been living abroad (usually Paris) studying the piano ($50.00) a lesson and teaching to keep himself going. Red haired, 6 ft. 6 - quick wit, talkative, pleasant, 517 Wednesday May 4. Nice (Antibes) (Picasso) Rome to Nice. named Walter Davenport - he plans to change his first name to Waldo for concert work. He was going directly to Barcelona & said he might look me up? I should be pleasantly surprised if he does. The Hotel Royal is charming. Situated on the Promenade des Anglais, right on the sea - it is the most expensive location in Capri. The hotel itself, is situated between the two best hotels, the Negresco & the Ruhl. Colorful terraces, (red topped umbrellas & tables) facing the blue, blue sea. The lovely indigo blue in the distance broken by a slash of greenish blue (veridian & white) breaking into acquamarine near the shore. The wide promenade is practically on the water. No sand beaches, only a narrow strip about 20 feet wide of rocks & pebbles. Palm trees & a gay, festive air with people well dressed promenading about. Already the Bikini bathing suits were in evidence. Got to the hotel by 12 & unpacked & washed by 1.30. Took a snack at a terrace bar on the promenade & took a public bus out to
