May 15 Dear folks, I have reached what may be a solution. Hope has been accepted at Tanglewood; I decided not to go to the hotel tho' Marion wished to go; you had quite a bit to do with it. She (Hope) made a good suggestion: summer school. That would be spending the [[strikethrough]] same [[/strikethrough]] $100 I earned this spring: actually $90: $60 for a class in American literature by good Perry Miller, $30 for bus-fare to Grandma. 8 weeks: July 6-August 27. Since class is at 9:00 five days a week would have much of day at home if I chose when you [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] were there. Mrs Austin of the Employment Bureau is trying to get me a room & board job nearby to save more money: when you aren't up here: & to enable social activities to take place more easily. I think I should go out perhaps twice a week: not come home but put at the YWCA : when not living in Cambridge: or I could stay with Hope [[strikethrough]] or Maria [[/strikethrough]] occasionally, as her summer is not entire either away. So if you could give me your dates of being here fairly accurately I could decide on the job, which in its experience in cooking & perhaps child care would be useful. The social activities: [[?]], folk dancing, lectures & forums = are reputed delightful, & are all free. There will be students & profs from everywhere. My tutor will be here; I shall get some help on work done on my thesis, which we have almost decided to be on Shakespeare or Jonson: he wanted to know if I should be around (before this plan). And I can very possibly go home to see Dol after, can't I? : a month (til 24th) would be worth it. I have registered for the class. Unfortunately I would have to pay for 4 courses next term even if I took as I perhaps shall, only 3, having by summer school enough credit (in the spring when thesis is hardest I may take under 3.) But I think it is worth it, don't you? Love, Doris
