March 29, 1949 Dear folks, I feel very badly that I shall not be able to be with you on your trip. However it seems necessary to catch up on my work which from my schedule of nights you see to have been spotty. I shall spend all days in Widner. We are obliged to pay $10 to stay, & to get our meals out. I shall make breakfast & lunch cheaply in the kitchenette & eat suppers with Bill (sharing expenses) and the crew. (the Lug's name is: Loyd P. Georgeson) Horhé will pick me up most nights & I will go home by bus so as to cause minimum trouble: Bill has 6 exams that week. [[strikethrough]] it is [[/strikethrough]] I am discouraged about my work, having just been "getting along" & must do some real [[strikethrough]] wor [[/strikethrough]] labor now: the nights of cource [[course]]. Fatigue as you noted is [[strikethrough]] of course [[/strikethrough]] still not overcome. Nelson was the last night, believe me! We had a pretty good, smooth time. He had a friend [[strikethrough]] Geo [[/strikethrough]] Charlie Rheams for whom I seized Mariam Ginsberg for a date in space of ten minutes warning: for Miriam had long ago [[strikethrough]] had [[/strikethrough]] some out with Nelson. Charlie, rich, took us to eat & to his apartment after a lecture on mathematics; & everybody had a good time. Just got B+ on my History hour exam. Everybody had beaming faces, it was a fair & easily marked. Am going to make a capital investment if Bill approves: a $17 record player (originally $35) which is the basis for the Victrola he advised (& has): from a Harvard boy. Bill promised to give me a speaker. ($17 [[strikethrough]] free [[/strikethrough]] ^[[free]]) (I hope) I will call Bill to examine it first, tonight I guess. It is worth it in the long run I guess tho' it seems quite an investment now; records will go on being produced the old way for a time, & I can get a few records bit by bit as all the old ones are sold by people at drastic reductions. Since the stores are selling at ½, bags are selling even lower. Will need no extra allowance I trust: just cut down on summer clothing or something like that. I [[strikethrough]] have [[/strikethrough]] will have about $8 left for the $10, [[strikethrough]] ca [[/strikethrough]] don't have to pay it at once, so when the $10 [[strikethrough]] arrives the 11th its [[/strikethrough]] check arrives the 11th I shall probably
