March 5, 1949 Dear folks, Yesterday morning I was preparing except for a few breakfast minutes for tutorial. Altho' my paper was not everything, we had a good discussion - are on good terms. We will go back to the Renaissance for study; Pope was quite too much for us; that's the only period, really, when English writers were not inhibited by one thing or another, & the ancients rather encouraged them to invention than imposed their "rules" upon them. Really the golden age. His thesis on Pope & Chapman's translation was very good. His feeling & sympathy for all [[strikethrough]] per [[/strikethrough]] writers is of the Joel Dorius Kind, tho he is shyer with people. [[strikethrough]] There [[/strikethrough]] Next week we will work on the essential nature & spirit of Elizabethan England through Shakesperian sonnets. No pleasanter job! Supper with Harry, [[strikethrough]] George & [[/strikethrough]] Horhay (Sp for George) & Bill -- chili con carne again (always, it seems!). Harry began adding chili sauce to the salad in error; so that too; and those men whose tongues must be like rawhide complained so of it that I had to eat almost all -- very good there. Ver funny time - never have I been present at such an unmitigatedly gay atmosphere - Bill [[strikethrough]] reciting [[/strikethrough]] applying disease names of beautiful sound with such an air in appropriate occasions. Then music & Gerard Manley Hopkins the poet. Reading together really shows up a poet; Gerard emerged somewhat battered. It is [[strikethrough]] only [[/strikethrough]] very regrettable that Bill has to work all today starting with a new doctor, to examine new types of patients - & the morning after is always quite.
Transcription Notes:
Joel Dorius - don't know why she wrote the word "Kind" with a capital. professor of literature at Yale University, Smith College and San Francisco State University.
Horhay - she says is the name for George in Spanish.
