May 3

1978 - Wednesday- 29˚ at 6 AM - clear. Sun Day Beautiful day but quite windy - high 62˚. Wes finished grading dam area and seeded it. Used electric paint scraper on cellar door and living & dining room window sills. Cut all grass (first complete cut) I watered new grass in back, trimmed dead wood from pines and spruce near sheds - put stakes around peonies. To Greenhouse Garden with Billie Newell for two hours work. Planted more onions. Edged weeping hemlock.

1979 - Thursday - 32˚ at 6 AM. Clear morning - afternooon cloudy - rain at 5:15 - light good rain. Pat here to clean. To Agway for corn (while have Galaxie Peat Moss - garden supplies  - Finast for groceries & fish store for red snapper. Wes added peat and [[?]] to melon patch - rototilled it. I planted 30 potatoes & more each cabbage and broccoli. Trimmed around trees and banks - cultivated daylilies along back road. Dogs playing with my missing glove!

1980 - Saturday - 44˚ at 6 AM. Fair, warm, - high 81˚ here. Tulips opening wide. I picked up veg from Pinchbeck for Monday's workshop. Joe Keller here to work. Wes spread half of sandy fill delivered yesterday. Joe cut grass across big bridge. I planted 25 potatoes in garden - some in compost covered with straw. Also planted mini-cabbage and broccoli. To Ruth Sharp's at 5 o'clock for Derby - Nancy Carroll made Mint juleps in silver cups. Filly Genuine Risk won.

1981 - Sunday - 35˚ at 6 AM - Fair - Breakfast before 8 o'clock Mass. Bet and Mike left for Neil's New Jersey at 9:45 - they have a new house.
Wes balanced books - I transplanted cellar plants - we cut grass - trimmed dead ivy at grass terrace - trimmed dead branches from laurel and lilac - lots of dead wood. I dug up little Taxus under Austrian and black pine - had been planted by birds. Beautiful warm day.

1982 - Monday - 40˚ at 6 AM - Fair - there were light - very light - showers during day.
Gizella and I walked in Hemlock Hills - saw large section of Marsh marigolds. To Derby Ridge - season pass $225 for both plus $2.00 green fees - bought gloves and hat for Wes - played 9 holes - enjoyed it and seeing all the changes. Wes finished drain from well water line - I repotted tomatoes, peppers gave some tomatoes and cucumbers to Gizella - dug Hepatica and Dutchman's Breeches from Bogus Road. Alex and Helen here at 6 to see Wall Garden.

May 4

1978 - Thursday - 29˚ at 6 AM - Fair in morning - Cloudy and cold in afternoon - rain predicted - we need it badly. Wes fertilized new patch across dam - moved extra [[?]] stone to corner of dam (pond side), put in, back dam - water over notch at cocktail time - we will have to adjust stones for spillway. I put undercoat on window sills - painted cellar door - watered  new grass - took limbs from pond - fertilized perennial garden - cut grass terrace and other spots - have pair Mallards around - swallows are back. 

1979 - Friday - 56˚ at 6 AM - clearing - Swallows have been at barn for a week. Rain predicted tonight - never came. I went to last Quilt-a-Vest Course - bought few groceries and Les Alpes bread for MQ & Jule afterward. Wes cleaned gutters and terrace - drying period new steps now over. After lunch cleaned out Galaxie and to Colonial Honda for new 4-Door Accord -  put in 11.2 gals - holds 13.2 - drove home - read manual checked veg garden - peas grabbing fence. Saw Towhee & Female Grosbeak

1980- Sunday - 57˚ at 6 AM. Fair - Wes saw barn swallows during walk - they haven't settled yet. To 8 o'clock Mass - Worked outdoors all day - cut front lawn - planted baby cabbage and broccoli in garden. Put rosemary, tyme [[thyme]] and parsley from kitchen in barn garden. Wes spread sandfill for raspberries.

1981 - Monday - 48˚ at 6:30. Fair. Wes trying to get a pigeon with Eileen's gun but they fly off. Did a wash. I met group at Ridgebury - Ledges Road to cover area proposed for road widening, sight improvement and drainage with Engineer Green and Mr. Sanfilippi. Mike Mannion came for water to compact sand more. Bogus cut grass off terrace. Wes put in back dam. Swallows are back - buzzed us at barn

1982 - Tuesday - 46˚ at 6 AM - Some clouds - No mass scheduled today. John Oliver phoned will plant on the 12th. I went to Ladies Golf first time played Captain's Choice - [[?]] on rules followed Back home at 1 pm. Wes had hour in shop and cut trees below bank - now looks quite open and clean. Brought down 3 daylilies from holding bed - planted them at deck steps - Gizella's [[?]] in perennial bed. Wes took out big stone there Watered. Beautiful day - some clouds - cool.
