June 18 1978 - Sunday - 60º at 7 AM. Cloudy. Hoped for rain never came last night. Cleared after Mass - warm and humid. Wes fixed approach along big bridge so lawnmower would fit around tree. I made rum cake and cookies for next Sunday's luncheon. After lunch we cultivated - picked some asparagus - letting most go to seed - saw 6th chipmunk- didn't catch him yet. Strange acting female Mallard comes in 1979 - Monday - 62º at 5:50 AM - Foggy - Partly sunny - very humid - high 84º - thunderstorm at 4 pm but no rain here - Tarrytown had a deluge. To Mass - Played golf 8:15/10:15. Wes had hour in shop. I used Helen Ross' typewriter to draft Sweepstakes Annual Report - sent it to Helene Merrick. Cut grass outside fence. With Billie Newell to Ridgefield - bought wild flower books for Garden Club prizes. To Pinchbeck to discuss trees for Memorial Garden with John. Ate last asparagus for dinner. 1980 - Wednesday - 45º at 6 AM. Fair. About 27 Mallards. Two white domestics came to terrace - had to chase one from big pot, Spike later laid an egg in windowsill. Played golf 8-10. Watered veg garden Cultivated flower patch near driveway & front steps. Swept terrace. Watered blueberries & raspberries. Cut back and side lawn. Wes took sod stacked on compost to blueberry site. Enjoyed watching white ducks fly to barn roof and miss! They are clowns 1981 - Thursday. 50º at 6 AM. Beautiful day. Warm but nice breeze and low humidity. Joe Keller worked. Freemans came at 10 o'clock - met the swimming pool man here - we don't know the outcome. Cut grass - trimmed - watered everything preparatory to trip tomorrow. To Bogus at 4:30 to water there - telephone man came to install house wiring and boxes. 1982 - Friday - 60º at 6 AM, Hazy early in day cleared to lovely day - rather humid. No golf as we both weren't feeling well. Puttered in morning inside and out - cleaned and put away Yankee Drool feeder - the last. After lunch worked outdoors. Wes started making the Bog Garden path - transplanted one azalea - I moved little bleeding heart to path edge - took Siberian Iris and Bleeding Heart from wet spot in Bog Garden to edge of lawn and to Wood Knoll - cultivated there. Cut grass. June 19 1978 - Monday - 64º at 5:45 - Foggy - had thunderstorm and rain during night - only 15/100 but welcome - To Mass - Golf 8:15/10:15. I went to Ann Haley St Elizabeth Seton Women Day of Retreat - stayed until lunch break - To Howland's for sheets to cover card tables for Sunday's party - took 6th chipmunk - bought 3 dresses Sylvia Barry - cultivated gardens - very humid day - thunderstorm at 5 pm 35/100 - Jule here for drink - Mary in Vassar Bros Hospital. 1979 - Tuesday - 60º at 6:15 - Partly cloudy - became beautiful day - sunny - pleasant - nice breeze. Joe Keller here - transplanted Hosta from across big bridge to front of shed - deheaded [[deadheaded]] couple Rhododendron - watered in Hollytone food on Exbury Azaleas and Weeping Hemlock. Cut back and side lawn. Played golf 11:30/1:30. Edged pacysandra [[pachysandra]] back of house. Jacobsen Mower returned finally (picked up May 29) rain about half hour then stopped. 1980 - Thursday. 44º at 6 AM. Overslept 15 minutes. Could have slept on, as when we reached the rectory there was a sign no Mass. To Marcus for milk. Ricky here at 9 o'clock - Louise McKeon at ten - set up of vegetables for Greenwich show Friday. Golf 2/4 after lunch. Wes cut across both bridges. I went with Louise for Ruth Sharp's roses. Wes discovered one white domestic duck spent night in barn - respect ? of all 1981 - Friday - 58º at 6 AM. Foggy - became lovely day. Packed for Cooperstown - Eileen here at 9 AM - we left 9:30 via Taconic - 82 - 145 - to 20 - down east side of Otsego Lake. Had stopped for picnic lunch at Cobbleskill Town Park. Suite 230-231 lake side. Walked around town. Pioneer and Main Streets craft shops. Cocktails in suite - dinner at lake side table - rocked on porch and bed. 1982 - Saturday - 60º at 6:30. Very foggy, cloudy no rain only mist until evening when it cleared. "Cleaning the house" day - in morning. Alex & Helen here at 11:30 to follow us to Jack and Helen Stephenson's in Bethel where her "Pen Women" were having a picnic. Their place looked beautiful. We had Sangria - lunch - walk to the lake - admired the vegetable garden. Stopped by Marcus for milk - home at 4:30 - walked about. Trying to plan development of our grounds.
