July 4 1978 - Friday - 58º at 7 AM - Raining - most parades cancelled. No ducks for corn - we saw a chipmunk - a fast runner! Wes did desk work - I finished papers - to Hammond Museum clb - 11 AM for film on "Tall Ships" and Daily News pictures of 20'a 30'a - 40'a -50's -60's - very interesting. Lunch at Wind Mill Dunes - rain stopped at about 3 o'clock - 1.9 inches in gauge - needed it 1979 - Wednesday - 45º at 6 AM! Cold - clear - watched a muskrat on front bank at breakfast time - 25 Mallards. Wes had hour in shop - I washed & dusted vegetable garden. w joined opening in blueberry net - sewing with cord. Washed car. Left for Eileen's at 10:30 Very few cars on road. Mary also at Tarrytown. Had happy holiday. Moved Eileen's single bed upstairs and brought down double bed. Home at 6:15. Rain in Tarrytown - only 2/10 inch here. 1980 - Friday. 65º at 6:30 - Fair - beautiful warm day. Did garden chores - watered hanging plants, etc. Left at 11 o'clock for Eileen's - had steak cookout - visited Elsie Mar - admired her dog Pebbles and garden - drove to Rock Wood Park near Phelp Memorial Hospital - beautiful land - walked about. To Cornell's 50th Wedding Anniversary Open House at son Barry's on Palmer Lane, Pleasantville. Saw Mary Q there. Home at 8 - Noisy firecrackers at Ghee to 1:45 AM. 1981 - Saturday - 68º at 6:10. Cloudy. Light rain most of daay. Managed to pick peas and flowers in afternoon for party tomorrow. Polished silver and brass. Cleaned house. Put gypsy moth traps together. Wes had lots of time in shop. I caught up on papers. 1982 - Sunday - 54º at 6 AM. Sun coming up - things look beautiful and wet. To 8 o'clock Mass. Prepared for Eileen's visit - here at 11:30 with bread and Buttons who is minding better. Dinner & Wes cooked chicken. Eileen and I went over to Ridgefield for Heritage Day - walked Aldrich Museum. Back to Bogus - sat on deck - saw pair Pilated [Pileated] Woodpeckers - what a thrill. Eileen left at 5. We went to Ruth Sharp's at 5:45 - home a 7. Great day. Warm sun - cool breeze. July 5 1978 - Wednesday - 47º at 6 AM - Sunny & clear - beautiful day. Joe Keller here - did all trimming. helped Wes put stone in overflow [[strikethrough]] bed [[/strikethrough]] wall - trimmed & weeded junipers over little bridge. I had a haircut at 10:15 - shopped for groceries after. Wes and I did 2 big hemlock - the "Woodstock" and one other - at the fenceline. Eleven Mallards for corn - greatest number to date. 1979 - Thursday - 45º at 5:30 - Clear & cold! A record low. Cool and breezy all day - wore sweaters. After an hour in shop - Wes raked part of road, put rye grass on edges. I planted row of broccoli and cabbage. Cultivated the new row of lettuce - day lily bed along road - wild flower garden at shed. After lunch we trimmed 3 hemlocks at fence line. To Mary Luke's at 5:30 for a cocktail. Alex, Helen and granddaughter Cathy there. 1980 - Saturday - 56º at 6:30. Fair - dusted veg garden before breakfast. Wes had shop hour - I watered hanging plants. To Basic for groceries - gasoline - getting about 25 mph (mpg) around town driving. Cut front - side & back lawns. Cultivated back of garden. Wes trimmed out bushes over road near wild flower garden. Picked peas, strawberries and broccoli. Shower about 10 pm - had been muggy day. 1981 - Saturday - 70º at 5:45 - cloudy - 1.85 inches in rain gauge - hope it clears for party this afternoon. Light rain this morning - cleared in afternoon for our party. Polly and Irene here at 3:30 - Tracys - McPhersons - 3 McKeons, Harrisons, Stoddards - Eliases - Rosses - Hartcorns - Jessups - (Mark Sattle has bad back) here about 5:30 - 7:30 - Rosses and Harrisons left at 9. Lovely evening. 1982 - Monday - 48º at 6 AM - Fair - beautiful day - warm in sun. Worked on knoll - watering - transplanted Astibe prenela and one Hosta. Wes took out stones buried near one Azalea - Watered south side and veg and perennial gardens. Identified Wood [[Powee?]] which we have heard and admired last two days. Wes filled in cliff wall - has one stone to go. Tried to see "E.T." in Brookfield but it was sold out. Total eclipse of moon but too low in sky to see behind trees.
