August 3 1978 - Thursday - 70° at 6:45 - Cloudy - Rained during night - one-eighth inch. Did house chores in morning - To Bethel for corn, groceries and Mullaneys for envelopes and file labels. Deadheaded. Wes picked almost one gallon of blueberries. After lunch, to Dlhy golf course - played only 3 holes when thunder and lots of boys on course sent us home. Rosses, Abie & Cliff Caldwell, sister and brother in law & Bob and Cathy here for drink at 5 pm. 1979 - Friday - 72° at 5:45 - Hazy - Hot - Humid Thunder in afternoon - no rain until after seven o'clock - .20 inches. To Mass - Golf 8/10. Worked around place - cut grass - cultivated - edged - picked blueberries & beans - carrots - peppers - Edged Astilbe garden Wes had an hour in shop. Only 3 Mallards for evening corn. Mole or mice tunneling in flower borders. 1980 - Sunday - 66° at 6:15 - Hazy. Had thunderstorms during night - 75/100 in garage - Continued hot & humid - high 87° - uncomfortable working in Sun. Took it easy - deadheaded - also did the sedum at front walk. Picked blueberries & vegetables. Had lunch on terrace. Pond very brown after rain these days - walked up road to see if water under bridge was brown. Saw lilies along road. 1981 - Monday - 54° at 6 AM - Hazy - To record lots of mole or mice holes and burrows here and at Bogus. Looked like rain but none - Orange grass spreading - extremely dry - pond down. Deadheaded - Trimmed branches from Red Pine & Au[[?]]bian. I cultivated veg garden. - Wes edged. Sun garden - I cultivated it in preparation visit Elizabeth Hull and Gerry Lindsay, her gardener - here at 2 pm for look around. Bought corn, bananas, gas for car - Chicken from Marcus - No work at Bogus, - interior doors delivered. 1982 - Tuesday - 62° at 6 AM, Fair. To Mass. I played golf with ladies 8:15-11:15. Wes had shop hour and grubbed out stumps above mailbox He worked on East wall off deck. I picked up flowers from church. Stopping at McKeon's to get key. Cut grass. Trimmed - Watered August 4 1978 - Friday - 74° at 6 AM - Thunderstorm at midnight. 1.25 inches. 31 ducks. To 730 Mass. Went to Texaco at Harrison at 10:15 (after deadheading and picking vegetables - first 2 tomatoes) met Eileen at Guest House and she showed us the decorating and furnishings she had done there - had lunch on porch. Home at 3 p.m. Nap. Helen & Alex here at 5:30 for drink - to Hearth for dinner - To "Revenge of Pink Panther" Brookfield Fine Arts. 1979 - Saturday - 68° at 5:30. Very hazy and humid. 34 Mallards for breakfast corn. To 7:30 Mass. Did preparation for party - cleaned house - set up tables in breezeway - deadheaded - cultivated perennial garden. To Bethel for cheese, oil - looked for pink paper napkins - none. Very warm day. Vargas, Castles, Mary & Jule here at 5:30. 1980 - Monday - 65° at 6 AM - Hazy, hot & humid. Golf 9:30 - course closed for maintenance to then. Slow - lots of people - off at 10 - home at twelve. Lunch & nap. Washed mildew off house - all sides except one still have to do breezeway roof side Anne Tracy brought her ivy wreath and 2 small plants for care while they are abroad. Put fan in bedroom window at night 1981 - Tuesday - 70° at 6 AM - Foggy - Hazy - Hot Too many Grackles & Pigeons - Mallards came in after we started breakfast. No rain - thunderstorm never came although it looked like one. Ricky picked up vegetables. Deadheaded. Wes packed books and measuring tools. I packed 2 boxes books and Copenhagen figurines. Wes & Mike went to Stonington for wood paneling - decided on Ash. I cleaned out cellar plant table. 1982 - Wednesday - 62° at 6 AM. Foggy - Prepared picnic lunch. Tracys picked us up at 9 AM Mark & Millicent took Alex and Helen and Lucienne - drove to Essex for steam railroad ride - bus to Deep River for boat ride on Connecticut River only the boat couldn't hold all passengers so we ate our lunch - and Mark's wine - on Dolly Madison tied up at pier. - lovely breeze as it was sunny and hot. Back to Essex and a visit to Gift Shop - Pretty town. Home at 5 pm - evidently cloudy in Ridgefield all day as flower pots not dried up. Wes bought Third Ave. RR book
