September 6 1978 - Wednesday - 50° at 7 AM. Foggy - sun breaking thru - 18 ducks flew away when cat came to corn spot. Golf 8:30-11. To Bank - Stop & Shop - Caldors - St. Mary's to leave items for Fair Saturday but no one there. After lunch Wes finished spreading all fertilizer on grass. I picked vegs - dug potatoes - big ones this year. Planted chrysanthemums. Terry brought in from Lexington Garden. I went to Committee on [[? Als Chetics]] meeting at Alex's at 8 pm. 1979 - Thursday - 72° at 6 AM. Last of Hurricane David passing through - small dead limb blew down from breezeway maple during breakfast - one live limb fell later and two more broken ones held up there. Power off at 8:07 to about 8 pm. - high winds - 2.73 in. rain. Cleared at 4 pm - we picked up debris then. Took in hanging plants earlier - took apart Trough garden - Wes made drawing of it - we labeled all the plants carefully. Called off cocktail party here - To Ruth Sharp's at 5 pm - cooked her 2 trout on gas stove with Helen & Alex Ross. Big crane flew in during storm. 1980 - Saturday - 60° at 7 AM. Foggy - cleared later to beautiful day - perfect if it had rained yesterday. Wes painted breezeway end of house - using rope for support over roof. I washed garage front and entrance. Put flowers in Flower [[? Dre]] Watered pots. Picked squash and tomatoes. Wright Tree here - went over tree work. Wes cooked steak for dinner 1981 - Sunday - 54° at 6:30. Wes had put up thermometer outside dinette window. Fog - cleared later - warm 75° here. To 8 o'clock Mass. Cleared area of railroad ties and debris for St Francis bird-bath. Wes made well around oak off greenhouse I watered - Daylily blooming at North end nursery. Ross' came for a drink at 5:30. Eileen had Buttons dog breeder with her for Westchester Kennel Show. 1982 - Labor Day - 49° at 7 AM. Beautiful day - warm sun - cool. I picked up cancer study from Mary Luke, the Sobols and Tracys. Planted Woodruff and Sedum Eileen gave me. Wes moved Belgian Block in curve of driveway entrance to improve drainage - brought down soil and chips to finish it. Cut grass - growing fast - looks green but a lot of weeds. Moved remaining Ligularia (2) To position behind railroad ties. Planted a row of lettuce - threw out one cucumber and a pepper. September 7 1978 - Thursday - 70° at 6:30 - Cloudy. 7 Ducks Green Heron is still around: Pat Molles came at 8 - housework - left at 7 pm. Wes sanded livingroom window ledge to bare wood - scraped shingles that has loose paint. I edged & cultivated gardens around house. Wes painted livingroom front after lunch - didn't quite finish it - paint ran out and time. I picked strawberries, beans, tomatoes. Cleared in afternoon - no rain - we need it. 1979 - Friday - 64° at 6:30. Cloudy. Cherry bback at exit uprooted during storm - tore up bank. Lots of ducks. To Mass. Sun out at 9 o'clock, Clean up day after hurricane - swept terrace - raked all around house - at front lawn - below barn - around house - picking up millions of sticks. Pruned Austrian Pine and Red Pine - cut outside fence. Rehung fuschia - cut it back drastically. Trimmed impatiens in big pots. 1980 - Sunday - 54° at 6:30. Clear beautiful day. Water is below dam and scum mars pond. To 8 o'clock Mass. Did lots of miscellaneous chores - Wes balanced books, made new deck corn tray, replaced lights at barn, straightened rock wall at barn - put cord back in green machine. I pruned dead limbs in dogwood, pines, birch, picked vegetables, cut grass at sheds and around veg garden. Over 100 Mallards 1981 - Monday - 62° at 7 o'clock - slept late - Cloudy. Slight shower over night - Labor Day - President Reagan not invited to N Y C Parade. Unpacked more [[london?]] [[coal?]] binoculars - clocks. Hung Mirror mobile in skylight. Moved some benches in Wes' shop. Cleaned up area near mailbox - Wes relocated Varga's and our mailboxes. Enjoyed good TV reception. 1982 - Tuesday - 56° at 6 AM. Fair - clouded up in late afternoon - few sprinkles at night. To Mass. I played golf with ladies 8:30 - 11. To Miss Emily's and [[? Finast]] - coffee on coupon $1.69 - regularly $2.19. Ed Teclan - Bob Douch Lon Strahl and Bill Prisani took Wes to lunch at Rosy Tomorrows - Vernon was ill. I watered wood knoll, threw away the zucchini plant from knoll front - not successful there, Transplanted the second Aruncus - pulled the boney Heliopsis (?) from the root ball.
