September 8 1978 - Friday - 42 degrees at 6 AM - clear. Fog on pond - cold morning, but beautiful. To 7:30 Mass. Golf 8-10. Wes started preparing pond side of garage for paint - scraped - sanded etc. I painted living room window and finished shingles there. Light rain at 5 o'clock stopped painting job. I dug perennials to take to church for tomorrow and made cake. 1979 - Saturday 59 degrees at 6 AM - 50 ducks ate - Wes put out more corn when second large group flew in - first took off. To Mass. Hour’s shop & garden club work. Wrote Kelly - she & Barbara coming 14th. Shopped Finast but couldn’t find jelly glasses. Called GE Repair for refrigerator - same man who fixed dryer - fan motor - hope that’s it - Raked more storm debris near slider - uprighted birch at inlet - big job with block & tackle 1980 - Monday 46 degrees at 6 AM. Clear - beautiful day. Played golf 8:30-10 o’clock with Paul. Painted garage front shingles - spray painted white iron chairs. Wes burned paint from dining room window ledge (sill) and return over breezeway - primed them. Ricky Harrison came for Vegas - gave her lots of tomatoes, lettuce, peppers - onions. Cooked steak at outdoor grill. 1981. Tuesday - 62 degrees at 6 AM. Cloudy - some light sprinkles - thunderstorm at 11:25 pm - loud crack. No workers - not even Mike - showed up. To Mass - shopping rounds. Meekers - Nutmeg to leave lawnboy - gasoline - Waterworks for T.P. holder and towelbar - looked at fixtures for powder room - bought ice tray and bin at Zassa's - Basics - dug around two more trees - voted for Liz Leonard - the winner. 1982 - Wednesday - 53 at 6:30 - Cloudy - cleared to beautiful afternoon - quite cool. Wes took car for 30,000 mile checkup - had prescription for blood pressure pills filled - shopped Ace - I made stew to leave for Wes' dinners next two weeks - chocolate cake - cookies. Lunch - nap - cut grass - Wes started rebuilding top of north wall - I moved Siberian Iris from bog garden to top of south slope - watered transplants September 9 1978 - Saturday - 53 degrees at 7AM - clear - no ducks - Couple came after breakfast. Last lily in perennial garden fell off. Wes drove me to church fair at St Mary's took grill - big Revere frying pan - kerosene lamp - plants - coffee cake. I worked in Bake Shop until 12 noon - Wes went to bank & Marcus and then sanded more of garage pond side. He returned for me - we grocery shopped Gran Central & Stop & Shop & Liquor. Cut grass - primed garage - put final coat on livingroom window sills. Beautiful, cool day. 1979. Sunday - 45 degrees at 6:30. Fair. Ducks becoming shyer - flew away when put out corn - 30 back soon - many more - loads at night - 3 pails of corn - more than we've ever seen. To 8 o'clock Mass. Wes put up new middle size mailbox - I cleaned feed baths - edged cultivated retirement garden - Wes raked up willow at sheds I deadheaded & cultivated perennial garden - hurricane had broken lots of zinnias. Wes cut across big bridges - I cut at sheds and across big bridge 1980 - Tuesday - 40 degrees at 6 AM. Dark - fog on pond. Little Family (6 Mallards) reached corn first - too many ducks around all day. To Mass. Wright Tree men here - took down big maples along road - Wes took two loads of wood to shed - chips were put near blueberries - Erhardt Plumber here on stopped kitchen sink - took all morning to open pipe. Changed drain baskets in sink. Painted few places primed yesterday. Wes cut grass - I cut terrace. George Ventiss Carpenter here to estimate terrace door board and cellar door etc. 1981 - Wednesday - 54 degrees at 6 AM. Fair - Beautiful day. Gizela had 1 inch rain in her gauge from last night's storm so glad to see the ground moist Mirrors and tub enclosures installed - Mike put window sills in Wes' shop - extra shelves for den bookcase - put screens on sliders - Mason went over work at front step. Wes put up shelf in dinette - picked up Lawnboy from Nutmeg - cut grass - Voted in referendum 1982 - Thursday - 52 degrees at 6 AM - Beautiful sky at breakfast time - beautiful day - getting warmer. To Mass. I picked up Helen and we worked at Ballard 9-12 - shopped Brunetti for chicken and left Essex negatives for development. Wes continued work on North wall - Just a few back stones to go - now looks better - higher on big stone side. I picked beans and zucchini. Watered everything. Nan Morris came for cancer study forms. Gave her tomatoes - also Helen. Most people's tomatoes still green.
