Organs

A unit of two or more different tissues associated in performing some special function of the body is called an organ. The heart which circulates the blood; the lungs, which purify the blood; the kidneys which eliminate waste from the blood; the stomach and intestines which digest the food, are some of the important organs.

Systems

An arrangement of organs, closely allied to each other and concerned with the performance of the same function is known as a system. Each system has its own work to perform, but no one, working independently, is able to carry on the work unaided by the other systems of the body. They are interdependent.

There are NINE systems in the human body, as follows:

1. SKELETAL or OSSEOUS SYSTEM consists of the bones of the body.
FUNCTION: support and protection.

2. MUSCULAR SYSTEM consists of the muscles of the body.
FUNCTION: to cause motion by contracting and relaxing.

3. NERVOUS SYSTEM consists of the nerves of the body.
FUNCTION: adaptation to environment and control coordination of organic function.

4. VASCULAR or CIRCULATORY SYSTEM consists of the heart, blood, blood vessels; Lymph and Lymphatic glands.
FUNCTION: to distribute body fluids to all the cells.

5. ENDOCRINE SYSTEM consists of the ductless glands of the body.
FUNCTION: to feed essential substances to the blood stream.

6. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, tracea, bronchial tubes and lungs.
FUNCTION: to provide oxygen and rid the body of excess carbon dioxide.

7. DIGESTIVE SYSTEM consists of the alimentary canal (stomach and intestines) teeth, tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, and the liver.
FUNCTION: to change food, physically and chemically into a state to be absorbed by the blood stream (Digestion).
