THE VERTEBRAE is the series of small bones that comprise the spinal column. In youth there are 33 bones in the vertebrae but in adults there are only 26. The upper end supports the head, and the lower end is attached to the pelvic bones which in turn are joined with the hip bones. The first upper bone of the vertebrae is called the ATLAS and the second upper bone the AXIS. The Atlas supports the head and the Axis forms a pivot around which the Atlas rotates when the head is turned. THE RIBS, 24 in number, are situated twelve on each side of the vertebrae and form the thoracic cavity. They are elastic, arch shaped bones, the first seven pairs of which are called the TRUE RIBS, and the remaining five pairs the FALSE RIBS.
