one of the most important operations in treatments for stimulating the growth of the hair.

PREPARING THE PATRON FOR SCALP MASSAGE

After removing the hair pins and ornaments and combing out the tangles, part the hair into four parts from forehead to nape of the neck and from ear to ear. Taking one section of the hair at a time, brush the hair upward and outward from the scalp with a small but firm brush. Avoid brushing downward as downward brushing always produces oil. The brushing will stimulate and strengthen the hair roots. After vigorously brushing the four sections of the hair, apply a thin layer of cotton to the bristles of the brush and repeat the operation. This will remove all the dirt and excess oil from the hair.

With the hair clean and the circulation already begun by the brushing, you are ready to begin the actual massage. Go through the entire scalp massage process in the following manner:

MASSAGE MOVEMENTS

1. In three counts, 1, 2, 3, massage from the tops of the ears to the crown of the head with the finger tips.

2. In three counts, 1, 2, 3, massage the entire scalp, employing the thumbs.

3. In three counts, 1, 2, 3, massage the scalp with a rotary movement employing the finger tips.

4. In three counts, 1, 2, 3, massage the scalp from the hair line to the crown of the head, employing the finger tips with a rotary movement.

5. In three counts, 1, 2, 3, massage the scalp from the nape of the neck to the crown of the head, employing the finger tips with a rotary circular movement.

6. In eight counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, massage the scalp upward, downward, forward and backward, employing the palms of the hand.
These movements are very soothing and cause the blood to rush to every part of the scalp, thereby increasing the circulation throughout the entire body.

Exercise, in the form of walking, tennis, golf, etc., is on almost every wide awake mind, but in their enthusiasm, these persons often fail to realize that the scalp too, needs exercising. The operator and the patron must be impressed as to the world of good derived by regular scalp massage. In each treatment, the operator should repeat these movements as many time as she feels are necessary and their benefits made known to the patron.

THE MUSCLES MANIPULATED IN SCALP TREATMENTS ARE:
1. Occipito Frontalis--covering the top of scalp.
2. Temporal Muscles--around and above the temples.
3. Muscles of the Neck--sides and back of neck.

THE ARTERIES INVOLVED IN SCALP TREATMENT ARE:

1. Posterior Auricular--Under the ears.
2. Occipital--Neck and back of head.
3. Temporal--Temples.
4. Superior Orbital--Eyes and forehead.

THE PRINCIPAL NERVES OF THE SCALP ARE:

1. Supra-Orbital--Eyes and forehead.
2. Temporal--Temples.
3. Great Auricular--Side of the neck and ear.
4. Posterior Auricular--Behind the ears.
5. Great Occipital--Top of head.
6. Posterior Occipital--Back of head and neck.

TIGHT SCALP

Grass vegetables, and fruits have no chance to grow in soil that is tight and undernourished. We see the farmer cultivating his fields, enriching them with fertilizer that his plants might thrive, grow and have an abundant yield. Hair on the human head must be dealt with in much the same manner. The scalp, is the "soil" of the hair, furnishing it strength and nourishment. When it becomes hard, tight, and inflexible, it is poor, undernourished and needs to be fed. The scalp should be loose and pliable, easily moved with the finger tips, and free of scales, oil and dirt which cover the pores through which it breathes.
