THE MADAM C. J. WALKER SCHOOLS With the scalp unable to breathe a functional disturbance arises which prevents the blood vessels and sebaceous glands properly doing their work of nourishing the hair and as a result the hair becomes dry and brittle, breaks off and falls out. The Violet Ray and electric vibrator have been found to be excellent means of invigorating the scalp, stimulating the blood supply and activity of the oil or sebaceous glands which encourage scalp health. These appliances when used in conjunction with the finger tips and regular scalp massage movements will loosen the scalp, make it soft, pliable, and full of activity. VIOLET RAY MASSAGE When the scalp is tight and exceedingly oily the oil glands may be encouraged to relax and cease exuding to much oil by applying the Violet Ray to the scalp after the scalp has been cleansed (shampooed) and the regular Massage Movements with the fingers have been given. Sedative, calming or soothing effects are obtained by using a mild flow of current and keeping the electrode in close contact with and moved back and forth all over the scalp for about five minutes. [[image]] Violet Ray Massage VIBRATORY MASSAGE This massage is given with the vibrator after, or in conjunction with, the regular massage movements. This massage is especially beneficial in treating dry scalps and persons suffering from nervous disorders. As nervous persons are usually anaemic, the Vibrator will stimulate the circulation, give gloss to the hair, and bring color to the cheeks. Massage up and down the spine on both sides of the vertebrae, but at no time allow the vibrator to cross the spine. With a firm pressure, permit the vibrator to travel from the shoulders to the base of the brain touching over the Occipital and Posterior Auricular nerves. This massage causes the blood to flow freely, the scalp to tingle with new life, and the patron is relaxed and rested. SPECIAL CARE WITH NERVOUS PERSONS In treating very nervous persons, whose hair as a result of the nervousness has [[image]] Vibratory Massage 112 TEXT BOOK OF BEAUTY CULTURE become scant, dead, prematurely gray, or is falling too rapidly, moisten the finger tips with Eucalyptus and go over the scalp, employing the regular massage movements. This special massage may be concluded by going over the scalp, down the vertebrae and around the shoulders with the vibrator. Avoid, as in all other massage with the vibrator, crossing the spine. DANDRUFF TREATMENT 1. Shampoo the hair, dry thoroughly and press. 2. Apply Madam C. J. Walker's Tetter Salve, hot, with a small piece of medicated cotton. 3. Steam the Tetter Salve into the scalp by wrapping hot towels around the head or by using an electric steamer about five minutes. 4. Give the regular scalp massage movement for five or ten minutes. 5. Apply more Tetter Salve, cold, allowing this to remain on until the next treatment. 6. Expose the patron's scalp to the infra-red lamp for four or five minutes. 7. Apply the high-frequency current (Violet Ray) six to eight minutes. 8. Dress the hair. Note. The Iodine Treatment explained later may also be used for alleviating dandruff. DRY SCALP TREATMENT This treatment is to be recommended where the sebaceous glands fail to function properly and supply enough natural oil to the scalp and hair. This condition may be caused by too little outdoor exercise, use of strong soaps or irritating preparations on the scalp. 1. Massage the scalp using the regular manipulations. 2. Give an egg shampoo. If the scalp is very dry, rub hot mineral oil into the scalp before shampooing. 3. Dry the scalp thoroughly and press the hair. 4. Apply Madam C. J. Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower with a small piece of medicated cotton using a rotary motion of the fingers. 5. Expose the scalp to the infra-red lamp for five minutes. 6. Use the high-frequency (Violet Ray) over the scalp for five or six minutes. Note: The hot olive oil treatment explained later may also be used for treating dry scalps. 113
