THE MADAM C. J. WALKER SCHOOLS

OILY SCALP TREATMENT

This treatment should be used for any form of simple seborrhea oleosa (oily dandruff) or Seborrhea Sicca (dry dandruff) that is not complicated by pityriasis.

1. Massage the scalp, using the regular movements.

2. Shampoo the hair thoroughly, rinse, leaving the hair slightly damp.

3. Apply a non-irritating lotion made for oily scalps, usually one containing a good percentage of alcohol, Steam in well with hot towels or the electric steamer.

4. Untangle, dry thoroughly and press lightly.

5. Apply Madam C. J. Walker's Temple Grower to the scalp with a small piece of medicated cotton.

6. Expose the scalp to the infra-red lamp for five minutes.

7. Dress the hair loosely, using the comb only. Do not brush.

Note: The salt glow treatment explained later is also highly recommended for oily scalps.

HOT TAR OIL

Prepare the patron in the usual way and part the hair with a fine comb. Loosen up the dandruff with the finger tips, the Violet Ray or the Vibrator. If the hair is dry, use the Vibrator, and if it is oily, the Violet Ray gives the best results. Mix three tablespoonsful of tar oil with one tablespoonful of vinegar and heat the mixture over the gas flame. Brush away from the scalp all evidence of the loosened dandruff, apply the tar oil and vinegar with a small cotton pad. This mixture should remain on the scalp for from six to twenty-four hours, after which the hair is shampooed in the regular way.

Many patrons complain that tar oil has a disagreeable odor, but

the operator should overcome this argument by telling the patron of its benefits and assuring her that the inconvenience will only require one night, for the tar oil may be thoroughly washed out the next morning. In cases where the hair is exceedingly oily, bathe the scalp in warm salt water. Then dry the hair thoroughly and apply the tar oil. Shampoo within twenty-four hours with Madam C.J. Walker's Shampoo. Dry well, and expose the patron's scalp to the Infra-Red Lamp for about five minutes. Use the Violet Ray three or four minutes and proceed to press and dress the hair.

Even though tar oil is unquestionably of great benefit in reducing the oil in very oily scalps, it is best to confine its use to dark hair only. We find that this oil has a tendency to rob light hair of its high lights and brilliance, leaving the hair dull and muddy looking.

Hot oil treatments are not necessarily confined to the combat of disease of the scalp. They are very often a necessity for retaining the general health of the scalp and hair, just as an occasional laxative or stimulant is necessary to the body. They reduce the oil when it is excessive, and they increase the oil when the scalp is dry and the hair brittle. After a permanent wave, it is almost imperative to precede each shampoo with and oil treatment, and after the shampoo, oil should be massaged into the scalp.

The Madam C. J. Walker Company highly recommends hot oil treatments. The oil is best applied by heating it in a small machine oil can and dropping it, drop by drop, into the parts of the hair on the scalp and massaging it well into the pores. Madam C. J. Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower, applied in this manner, awakens tight, dry and undernourished scalps and adds life, lustre, and health to the hair. The combination of tar oil, olive oil and castor oil, mixed in even parts, is also recommended in the treatment of undernourished conditions, the castor oil purging the scalp just as it purges the body when taken inwardly.

HOT OLIVE OIL

Heat pure olive oil as described above. Never place the oil can immediately over the flame but rather place the oil can in a small vessel, which is filled with water, giving a double boiler effect. Part the hair and loosen the dandruff as has been explained. Drop in the oil, drop by drop, and massage vigorously with the finger tips, expose the scalp to the Infra-Red Lamp for about five minutes. After the olive oil has been forced into the scalp, allow it to remain on the hair for from six to twenty-four hours and then shampoo.
