wave of the thin side of the hair into the first wave going toward the face on the heavy side. See Illustration 7.

In most cases the thin side of the hair can be waved down in one section. If it is too thick, wave in sections and match up the waves in the same manner as explained for the thick side.

When the entire head has been waved, finish the ends of the hair by turning them over a pencil, curling rod, or metal curlers to form bob curls, round curls or ringlets, as the customer may desire. See Illustration 2.

Pin a net over the hair tightly, and pinch the ridges of the wave to deepen them and proceed to dry under an electric dryer.

When the hair is thoroughly dry remove the net and comb the hair lightly and reset them by fingering the creases.

STRAIGHT BACK OR HORSE SHOE WAVE-

This is more difficult for the beginner than the parted wave because the hair separates more easily on the top of the head. This difficulty, however, is easily overcome by starting the first wave in the opposite direction in which the hair grows or is naturally inclined to fall.

With the hair well dampened with waving fluid and all tangles removed, the hair is combed straight back from the forehead, proceed to wave the hair across the forehead between the temples by pushing the hair toward the face. See Illustration 1. After the first ridge is completed, it is held firmly in place between the middle and forefinger of the left hand. The comb is then inserted on the side of the forehead and the second wave begun, moving back the desired width of the wave. Illustration 2. Continue this wave across the head by pushing up the unwaved hair to form the ridge. Continue this procedure until the entire top of the head has been waved.

The sides are then waved and matched in with the top hair in a semi-back or angular fashion, the waves pointing slightly downward toward the lower face.

Wave the hair to the end or finish with curls on shorter lengths of hair, or arrange a knot for long hair; dry, comb lightly and reset as described.

FINGER WAVING PRESSED HAIR

There is no difference in executing a finger wave on pressed hair and hair that does not require the pressing process except in preparing the hair to take it. Shampoo the hair as usual, but press it very straight. Best results come after giving the hard or second press. Then part the hair and apply a little Madam C. J. Walker's Glossine all over as a base for the waving fluid.

Apply a liberal quantity of Mme. C. J. Walker's Finger Waving Fluid for pressed hair and proceed to follow the movements outlined for giving a finger wave.

After drying, omit the combing out process until a lapse of a couple of days, when the wave may be combed and reset with a light application of Mme. C. J. Walker's Brilliantine.

To become an expert in the art of finger waving is quite an achievement. When the wave is set, properly dried, and combed out, it is as beautiful and as much admired as a perfect marcel.

Remember that curly hair may be finger waved but if the hair is very curly, coarse, and heavy, insert the combs as in water waving or the special metal waving clips and allow them to remain on the hair until it is partly dry. This will intensify the pressure on the ridges and aid greatly in obtaining good results without the loss of too much time.
