THE MADAM C. J. WALKER SCHOOLS

Close the upper end of the streaming tube as is shown in figure 20. The upper end may be crimped before placing the heater in position. The current is then turned on and allowed to remain on for from twelve to eighteen minutes, depending upon the texture of the hair, as will be explained a little later in this chapter. Then turn off the current and let the heaters remain in place for three minutes, at the end of which time, remove the heaters.

After the heaters and the fibre shields are removed,

and after the steaming tube has cooled, remove the tube by forcing the curler rod through the tube as is shown in figure 21, at the same time giving the tube a slight twist in

the direction the hair is wound. This will loosen the aluminum foil and make it easier to slip out. Do not

remove the steaming tube while it is warm.

After the curl has cooled a few minutes (do not remove the curl from the curler rod if it is still warm) untie the string from the end of the curl and remove the curl by gently

turning from the curler rod.

IMPORTANT-The steaming period varies somewhat under different conditions; different textures of hair require a greater or less amount of steam, also a variation in the strength of the current will change the time period.
As an example, medium to coarse hair requires twelve minutes steaming if your current supply is of full voltage, namely 110 volts.

Medium fine to fine hair should be moistened more and steamed from fourteen to eighteen minutes.

A very little experience will show you the proper length of time to steam all textures of hair.

Use the Steam Indicator for determining the exact steaming conditions within the steaming tube.

When the curls have all been removed from the curler rods, rinse hair in cold water and comb it out smoothly, pushing the waves in place from the ends, or by finger waving. We recommend waiting from twenty-four to forty-eight hours before shampooing. After the shampoo, place the hair in waves, using wave set for this purpose. Wave set is a liquid prepared especially for setting the hair; it is also used for finger waving. Full directions for use are on each package.

We do not recommend permanent waving dyed or bleached hair, unless good test curls are made first, as the natural structure of the hair has been destroyed and the hair will break off and not stretch and it must stretch to be permanently waved.

When permanent waving gray or white hair: Gray or white hair becomes discolored, turning yellow, which is due to the oils
