greater commendation than a distinctive hairdress. The expert operator must be familiar with the leading hair styles of the day, and must be able to recommend the style most suitable to the patron's appearance. This may be done by reading the Beauty Culture Magazines from month to month.

THINGS TO CONSIDER IN SELECTING A STYLE

Certain definite things must be considered in correct hairdressing. For instance, the outline of the head and the general contour of the face must be studied. The width and depth of the eyebrows and the nose, the width of the upper lip, the mouth, and the distance between the lower lip and the chin, all must be considered. A full or fluffy hairdress should never be attempted on a patron who has scant, thin hair. Likewise, a tight, close-fitting hairdress should never be used when the patron has hair in abundance.

We have heard the expression when speaking of certain persons especially adept in the art of hair styling that they are "born artists." There is some truth in the statement because a certain amount of natural artistic ability or instinct is essential to become a master of the art of hair styling, but practice and perseverance, coupled with following the rules laid down by leading stylists can do much to bring you success and recognition as a hair stylist.

RULES TO FOLLOW IN HAIR STYLING

3. When the face and features are regular, the hair may be arranged plain and dressed at the middle of the back of the head. See Illustration 5.

HIGH AND LOW HAIR DRESS

The low hair dress is considered more stylish for daily wear, but for evening wear, the high hair dress appears more regal and adds dignity to the wearer. Each of these styles, no matter when given, should be made comfortable to the wearer, otherwise the enjoyment of wearing them will be lost if they are ever so beautiful. A pretty hair dress, given without charge, occasionally, after completing a shampoo, press, bob or other operation, will make friends and increase the patronage of the shop and develop the fancy hairdressing end of the business.
